Discovery Transitions Intensive Outpatient Therapy

Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOP) is a primary treatment program optimized for addicts and alcoholics who need recovery and whose substance dependency is not so severe that they need medically supervised detox. Discovery Transitions IOP is designed for maximum effectiveness while still allowing the client to live at home or in a nearby sober living house. Group sessions and individual counseling make up the heart of our intensive outpatient therapy program. All sessions are facilitated by professionals with specific training in the field of addiction treatment. IOP is equally suitable for clients leaving an in-patient facility and for those seeking a fresh start in recovery.

IOP Therapy—What We DO

IOP therapy comprises a number of approaches that, when combined, promote a powerful, fundamental change in an addict’s approach to living, the result of which is not only freedom from drugs and alcohol but also a new experience of life and other people. In Discovery Transitions’ IOP therapy, we introduce and offer deep insight into the following:

  • the brain chemistry of addiction
  • the progression of alcoholism and addiction, and how they only continue to get worse without help
  • relapse prevention
  • introduction to 12-step work
  • spirituality
  • Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS)
  • relapse prevention
  • family education

The primary purpose of intensive outpatient treatment is to prepare you for life on a new basis, free from mind-altering substances, with the requisite life skills and ability to cope, as well as a spiritual basis for living. Our intensive outpatient program for substance abuse is therefore designed to be more strenuous in the beginning, when you are most vulnerable and possibly still reeling from your experience as an addict. Similarly, for the alcoholic, our intensive outpatient program for alcohol is designed to gradually cultivate independence on a new basis in recovery.
