Addiction therapy goes much deeper than simply treating the physical problem of chemical dependency on drugs and alcohol. The causes of addiction run deep. Unless underlying issues resolve, abstinence will fail to create reliable recovery.
If you are having difficulties in life and suspect that they are related to alcohol/drug use, or if your reliance on substances has come to the point where they dominate your life, Discovery Transitions’ Los Angeles addiction therapy program can help you.
Most people with substance abuse problems are unable to recognize they are struggling with addiction until he/she experiences severe consequences such as financial insecurities, legal problems, interpersonal relationship conflicts, or even health complications.
Drug Addiction Treatment
When the consequences of addiction pile up and become unbearable, there are only two ways to go. A person can continue trying to numb the pain of addiction or find help through drug addiction therapy. The initial admission of defeat—asking for help—is a significant first step toward finding a real and lasting solution. Discovery Transitions’ outpatient treatment programs are tailored to each individual’s needs. Ultimately, all addictions are alike in nature, but they have superficial differences that may require specific individualized levels of treatment. Heroin addicts may have a different set of psychological reactions than methamphetamine users, but the treatment model is essentially the same for each. Likewise, cocaine addicts may have different lingering obsessions. However, addiction therapy will gradually erase the superficial differences and reveal that addicts of all varieties are in fact fundamentally the same.
Similarly, alcoholism appears to be somewhat different from drug addiction. However, it is simply an addiction to the drug alcohol. At Discovery Transitions, alcohol addiction therapy includes counseling for addiction and the basics of treatment are consistent with those of drug addiction therapy.
What to Expect from Addiction Therapy
The basic components of addiction therapy are employed for all of our clients at Discovery Transition’s outpatient program. These components work to establish a foundation for maintaining long-term recovery. A holistic approach to addiction therapy cultivates the process of inner change. This method of therapy encourages not only freedom from drugs and alcohol but also a more productive, effective life.
At Discovery Transitions, we employ individual counseling, group therapy, and a trauma-informed approach to resolve various co-occurring issues/stressors. Discovery Transitions implement emotional intelligence enhancement training, psycho-drama experiential group sessions, and neuro-feedback applications. Utilizing these specific therapies as a vehicle to empower each participant, clients learn to navigate the holistic approach to relapse prevention, anger management, coping skills, and utilize these tools to enhance each individual’s quality of life.
We encourage the 12-steps at Discovery Transitions. We introduce them as an approach to uncover, discover, and discard lifelong beliefs that produce inner discord at a spiritual level. Each participant has an opportunity to transform their lives. Spiritual experiences are personality changes sufficient enough to bring about recovery from a seemingly hopeless state of mind. The term recovery is to regain that which has been lost; Discovery Transitions is here to assist in the restoration of the human spirit.
Chemical dependency is a threefold disease: biological, psychological, and sociological. In more technical terms, addiction is a brain disease in which the pleasure-reward circuit has been hijacked by the effect of substances. The addict’s brain seeks its new, altered equilibrium which generates a desire for more pleasure (drugs). The individual’s brain equates drinking or using with survival. The addict’s mind makes up a story to justify the desire: It’s not that bad; I can handle this by myself; I’ll taper in the next few weeks; I’ll quit when I go on vacation, or move to another city . . . The excuses go on and on. However, they are all simply justifications for a compulsion generated at a much deeper level. The concept of willpower is nonexistent for the addict and what looks like a “choice” to the addict is, in fact, a surrender to that compulsion.
