Group Therapy
At Discovery Transitions Outpatient, our Group Therapy Sessions are facilitated by licensed and registered mental health professionals and certified addiction counselors. They employ a combination of psychoeducational, skill-building, and process-oriented group models to guide meaningful and productive discussions.
Addiction and mental health challenges frequently cause people to feel profoundly isolated, disconnected, and alone—often leading to social withdrawal and difficulty sustaining healthy relationships. Group therapy directly counters these experiences by equipping participants with practical coping strategies while simultaneously fostering a strong, supportive community of peers who truly understand the journey.
Our committed clinicians are extensively trained in a wide range of therapeutic approaches, enabling them to support clients in achieving sustained recovery, improved emotional regulation, and greater overall mental and emotional well-being. Our group sessions address a broad spectrum of issues, including:
- Co-Occurring Disorders: Clients diagnosed with both substance use disorders and mental health conditions have co-occurring disorders (also known as dual diagnosis). Our specialized group therapy for co-occurring disorders treats both issues at the same time—an integrated approach widely recognized as critical for achieving comprehensive, lasting recovery.
- Addictive Disorders: Led by experienced addiction counselors, these focused sessions guide clients through the early phases of recovery. Participants explore common triggers, manage cravings, identify potential obstacles, and develop practical strategies to reduce the risk of relapse and build a stronger foundation for sobriety.
- Psychoeducation: These informative groups educate clients about their specific diagnoses, the nature of their conditions, and proven coping techniques. By gaining a deeper understanding of their challenges, participants acquire the knowledge and practical tools needed to drive meaningful, positive change in their lives.
- Spiritual Exploration: In a safe, non-judgmental, and inclusive environment, clients are invited to explore spirituality, reflect on personal beliefs, and discuss various spiritual traditions. This group helps individuals discover what resonates most deeply with them as a source of strength and meaning during recovery.
- Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT): REBT groups assist clients in recognizing irrational, self-defeating thoughts and replacing them with healthier, more realistic beliefs. By examining how distorted thinking contributes to harmful emotions and behaviors, participants learn to shift toward constructive patterns that support emotional well-being and positive action.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT groups target the negative, automatic thought patterns frequently seen in addiction and co-occurring mental health issues. Clients practice identifying unhelpful thinking, challenging distortions, and adopting balanced, adaptive ways of viewing themselves and their circumstances.
- Psychotherapy Process-Oriented Groups: These supportive, less structured groups—facilitated by a trained therapist—emphasize the here-and-now experience. Participants are encouraged to explore interpersonal dynamics, emotional reactions, and relational patterns in a safe setting, promoting insight and personal growth through authentic interaction.
- Trauma-Informed Groups: Recognizing the strong link between trauma and substance use disorders, our trauma-informed groups are led by specially trained therapists using evidence-based methods. These sessions adopt a strengths-based, compassionate approach, helping clients safely understand, process, and manage trauma-related symptoms while building resilience and empowerment.
