When you are new to recovery, everything seems strange. Our intensive outpatient program for substance abuse has been designed to be immersive, informative, and interesting. Because we consider the problem of addiction to be threefold— physical, mental, and spiritual—we discuss and promote growth in each of these areas. As days and then weeks pass without using, the physical effect of drugs lessens and the mind opens to the possibilities of recovery. Stopping using, despite its discomforts, is relatively easy. As we look at the basic definition of addiction—continued use in spite of negative consequences—the individual desires to stop and finds that stopping is not the issue: staying stopped is the real dilemma.
