For a lot of people, the hardest part of getting help isn’t admitting they need it. It’s the math. If I go into treatment, what happens to my job? My paycheck? My health insurance?

What do I tell my manager?

Those are real questions, and they keep capable, motivated people stuck for months or years. The good news is that treatment doesn’t have to mean stepping away from your career. Evening outpatient programs were designed for exactly this situation, and every week they let people in Los Angeles clock out of work and walk into a room where they can finally focus on getting better.

Here’s how it works.

At Discovery Transitions, our intensive outpatient program (IOP) and partial hospitalization program (PHP) are offered in morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. An evening IOP session typically runs about three hours, several days a week, starting after standard business hours.

A typical evening might include:

  • A group therapy session focused on a specific skill, such as managing cravings, handling anxiety at work, or setting boundaries.
  • Time with your individual therapist, either that evening or scheduled separately during the week.
  • Check-ins with our medication management and case management team as needed.

Then you go home, sleep in your own bed, and get up for work the next morning. There’s no gap in your résumé and no extended leave to explain.

Many people can’t afford to stop working, and losing employer health insurance in the middle of treatment is a serious problem. Evening programming means your paycheck and your coverage stay intact. We accept most private and commercial insurance plans, so treatment often costs far less than people expect.

Because sessions happen outside working hours, there’s no need to request medical leave or explain repeated absences. What you share with your employer, if anything, is entirely your decision. (Federal and California law also offer protections for people who do choose to take leave for treatment, and our case managers can help you understand those options.)

This is the part people don’t expect. When you spend the day at work and the evening in treatment, you bring that day’s stress straight into the room. The difficult conversation with a coworker, the urge to stop at the bar on the way home, the anxiety before a presentation: these become the material you work on that night. Skills learned in the evening get tested the next day. That kind of immediate feedback loop is one of the reasons outpatient care can be so effective.

Structure is a powerful part of recovery, and a job provides it. Waking at the same time, showing up, being accountable to others, and having something that’s not about your diagnosis all support mental health. Evening programs let you keep that anchor rather than remove it.

  • Full-time employees who can’t take extended leave.
  • Parents who handle school drop-off and work during the day.
  • Students with daytime classes.
  • People stepping down from PHP or residential care who are returning to work and want continued support.
  • Anyone who has been putting off treatment because “there’s no time.”

Evening IOP isn’t the right fit for everyone. If symptoms are severe, if you’re in early withdrawal, or if it’s hard to get through a workday safely right now, a higher level of care such as PHP may be the better starting point. Many clients begin with a more intensive daytime schedule and transition to evening IOP as they stabilize. Our clinical team will talk through this with you honestly so you land in the program that fits.

  1. Block the time like a meeting. Put your sessions on your calendar and treat them as non-negotiable.
  2. Plan your commute. Our Van Nuys location is easy to reach after work, and online and hybrid options are available if traffic or distance is an obstacle.
  3. Eat before you come. A three-hour evening session goes better on a full stomach.
  4. Tell one person. You don’t need to tell your boss, but having one friend or family member who knows your schedule makes it easier to protect it.
  5. Give it a few weeks. The first week can feel like a lot. Most people find their rhythm quickly.

Getting help shouldn’t require blowing up your life. Evening programs exist so you can keep working, keep supporting your family, and still get serious, evidence-based care from a team that has your back.

If you’ve been waiting for a schedule that works, this is it. Call us anytime at (818) 824-5022, email info@discoverytransitions.com, or use the Request a Call form on our website. We’ll help you find a morning, afternoon, or evening schedule that fits your life.
